Heelwork To Music- GOLD

This fun sport is taking the dog sport world by storm and has been recognised by The Kennel Club in the UK within the past 24 years and has been included in the Crufts Dog Show for the past 12 where competitors choreograph routines with their own choice of music of up to four minutes and perform these with their dog. Handlers of any age can participate and with any type a dog, there are no compulsory moves required to be performed in competition, which leaves scope to introduce moves which interpret the music in the best possible way. There’s no such thing as the ideal breed for heelwork to music, but it’s recommended that your dog has good recall and is well socialised before you join as heelwork to music happens off-lead. The more experience they have in performing a variety of obedience exercises the better their chances are at achieving success. No special equipment is necessary although props are allowed to enhance the routine and for incorporating into the performance. Its content enables you and your dog to develop more advanced skills and routines with choreography of your choice. Handlers of any age can participate and with any type a dog, there are no compulsory moves required to be performed in competition, which leaves scope to introduce moves which interpret the music in the best possible way.

What makes a successful heelwork to music routine?

There are two main criteria for a successful heelwork to music routine: the dog’s precise execution and content. Spending time with your dog while moving around to upbeat music is always a guaranteed mood lifter and this is the perfect way to help make obedience training fun for both of you. A strong bond between and your dog is the foundation of HTM. Freestyle gives handlers freedom to interpret the music in whatever way they feel as long as what they are doing is safe for the dog and suitable for a family audience.

Trick Training

Tricks are suitable for dogs of all ages, offering mental stimulation, especially when physical exercise is restricted for young or senior dogs. They can also entertain dogs with limited physical activity due to injury. Additionally, trick training can be beneficial for dogs experiencing reactivity and stress, providing an alternative to walks where they may encounter triggers, allowing them to decompress. Engaging in trick training with your dog encourages them to problem-solve and exhibit various behaviors which may help to increase the focus and limit frustration. It can be used to build our dogs confidence, teach them to be calmer and more thoughtful. While teaching tricks, we can develop our training skills focusing on timing, reward delivery and frequency which can help us if we want to work on behaviour modification or sports training. Therefore, learning new skills and investing some time in teaching your dog a few tricks can be immensely rewarding.
